Leicester Comedy Festival is run by a registered charity Big Difference Company (registered charity 1135167). All surpluses made by the festival are invested back into the event and used to support new comedy talent; the festival has a long tradition of providing a platform for new and emerging comedians. Projects such as Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Competition, UK Pun Championships and Silver Stand Up Competition have helped launch the careers of numerous comedians across the last 25 years (including Johnny Vegas, Romesh Ranganathan, Rhod Gilbert, Jason Manford & Josh Widdicombe). In 2018 we launched Circuit Breakers; a development programme to help support comedians wanting to perform at the festival and break into the UK comedy scene, meet agents, producers and members of the UK comedy industry.
The festival also provides a platform for other charities to raise money and profile; in 2018 these will include Comic Relief, LOROS Hospice, Charity Link, Prostaid and The Real Junk Food Project.
The money paid for a ticket goes direct to the act, or in some cases is split between the act and the venue. The festival does not set ticket prices and does not directly benefit from the income from ticket sales. Less than 5% of our annual income comes from public subsidy; the rest of our income comes from sponsorship, earnt income, fundraising events such as our annual Stand Up Challenge and an increasing number of donations from members of the public.
